06 June 2003 Five Achill Beaches Retain Blue Flag StatusAchill's five Blue Flag beaches have all retained their Blue Flag status following the announcement of the 2003 International Blue Flag Awards from An Taisce. The qualifying beaches are: Dooega, Keel (Trawmore Strand), Keem, Dugort and the Golden Strand (Dugort). County Mayo was awarded 13 Blue Flags in total, the (joint) highest in the country (shared with Kerry). Overall, Ireland was awarded 79 Blue Flags, 73 for beaches and six for marinas. The International Blue Flag awards are judged on a number of criteria including water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management and safety & services. The Blue Flag for beaches is only valid during the bathing season, which runs from June until the end of August.
