Press Releases from Achill Tourism
18 March 2003 Fine Weather Attracts Hillwalkers to AchillFine weather attracted scores of hillwalkers to the second annual Feile Siuloidi Acla / Achill Walks Festival over the recent bank holiday weekend. The event, organised by Achill Tourism, brought hillwalkers from all parts of Ireland. Over 80 people took part in two guided walks, while several smaller groups opted for self-guide walks on the island. The festival began with a reception at Ostan Oilean Acla, with the first guided walk setting off from Derreens on the Saturday morning accompanied by local pipers. This gentle shoreline ramble included Granuaile's Castle and Kildavnet cemetery before following the Atlantic Drive and returning over Derreens Hill to Johnny Pattens for well-earned soup and sandwiches. Points of interest and local history - including Irish placenames - were explained by the lead guide, Tomas MacLochlainn. Sunday saw a traverse of Slievemore mountain (671m) and exploration of the Deserted Village before returning to Dugort for refreshments and an awards ceremony at the Strand Hotel. Achill Tourism would like to thank all the venues and accommodation providers who helped make this event such a success.
