STAY SAFE AT SEA

BORD IASCAIGH MHARA ONGOING CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE FISHERMEN TO COMPLETE BASIC SAFETY TRAINING

Since 2000, forty-nine Irish fishermen have lost their lives at sea, with 2007 being by far the worst year with thirteen deaths recorded.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM0, the Irish Sea Fisheries Board launched its Stay Safe At Sea campaign earlier this year, the objectives of which are to remind fishermen that Basic Safety Training is mandatory, as is the wearing of Personal Flotation Devices (PFD's), and to focus on the importance of completing BIM basic safety training including the correct use of Personal Flotation Devices (PFD's), and handheld Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), which signal the coastguard in an emergency. PFDs are a vital and mandatory piece of safety equipment for all crewmembers and current lightweight, easy to wear versions inflate automatically on entering the water, turning an unconscious wearer face up in almost all circumstances. However, it is important to use the most appropriate type and size of PFD for the seafaring conditions encountered and so BIM provides safety workshops in coastal communities around the coast on this topic. BIM's three-day Basic Safety Training course focuses Personal Survival Techniques (PST), Elementary First Aid and Fire Prevention and Safety Awareness.

Through The National Fisheries College in Greencastle, the Regional Fisheries Centre in Castletownbere, Co. Cork, and a fleet of Coastal Training Units, BIM provide safety training to Irish fishermen and aquaculture personnel at over 30 coastal locations annually.

Under current fishing vessel regulations, all fishing vessel crew members must undergo Basic Safety Training and they must wear Personal Flotation Devices especially when working on the deck of a fishing vessel. The Stay Safe at Sea campaign is supported by a schedule of BIM training courses held nationwide through BIM’s network of training centres. During the three day intensive BIM training course, fishermen learn personal survival techniques and elementary first aid, as well as fire prevention and safety awareness, including the importance of maintaining good fishing vessel stability in all operating conditions.
