Achill Island’s Féile na Mara takes place from 18-20 July 2014. The popular Festival of the Sea is a celebration of Achill’s maritime heritage and the rich harvest of the Atlantic Ocean.
There is plenty for all ages at Féile na Mara. Go on a Seaweed Safari to learn how to recognise and harvest edible sea vegetables, buy the freshest possible fish at the harbour market, see behind the scenes at the RNLI Lifeboat Station open day, watch a traditional Achill Yawl Race, go on a boat trip or take part in the Blueway Activity Day.
The festival will be officially opened on Friday July 18th with a wine reception. Saturday will see Purteen Harbour transformed into a harbour festival, with live music, BBQ, fish for sale, marine conservation sessions, RIB trips and more.
One of the highlights of the weekend will be the boat trip to the Highest Sea Cliffs in Western Europe on Sunday July 20th. Step aboard the Pirate Queen and enjoy a leisurely 3 hour boat trip, taking in panoramic views of the wild Atlantic and the rugged coast of Achill Island. Sponsor Marine Harvest, producer of the world famous Clare Island Organic Salmon, will run boat trips to their salmon farm so visitors can see how the care they give the salmon results in such succulent and tasty fish.
The new Blueway marine trails at Keem and Dugort will be showcased on Saturday 19th also, with snorkel sessions and sea kayak sessions available at discounted rates.
