About the Achill 2010 Calendar Photography Competition
With the St. Colman's Achill calendar heading for its third year of production, it was decided to initiate a photography competition for suitable photographs to represent each of the months. With a first prize of €500 and other desirable prizes the competition attracted over one hundred entries from all over Ireland and abroad, and of course many from residents on Achill Island itself. The competition was only open to amateur photographers.

The standard was very high and presented a difficult task for the panel of judges: Sean Cannon, professional photographer, Keel; Glenda Colquhoun, professional photographer, Curraun; and Willem Van Goor, fine artist, Bleanaskill.

The theme of the competition was 'Achill, land of moor and mountain, Queen of the Islands, bold and free - her faces and places'. The images submitted had to reflect this theme. The winning photograph was submitted by Johanna Sweeney from Achill, and appears on the cover (shown, above) and also represents the month of April.
