About the Achill 2011 Calendar Photography Competition The St. Colman's 'Achill Calendar Photography Competition' is now a popular annual event and the winners and runners-up are all represented in this calendar.
With a first prize of €500 and other attractive prizes the competition has drawn a large number of entries, from all over Ireland and abroad, and of course many from residents on Achill Island itself. The competition is only open to amateur photographers.
The standard as usual was very high and presented a difficult task for the panel of judges: Sean Cannon, professional photographer, Keel; Glenda Colquhoun, professional photographer, Curraun; and Willem Van Goor, fine artist, Bleanaskill. They did a splendid job and are deserving of thanks and appreciation for their dedication to the task.
The theme of the 2011 competition was "Onshore and Offshore, Silence and Sounds". The images submitted had to reflect this theme.
The winning photograph, taken by Ruth Lavelle, is on the cover of the calendar and also represents June.
