The 2004 Achill Walks Festival took place on the weekend of 13th and 14th March 2004. Saturday's walk was entitled the 'Minaun Cliffs Walk' and this lengthy walk explored old track ways including bealach na mban and the Coffin Trail that used to link the lower and upper Achill communities. This walk also took in features such as a sea arch, promontory forts, rock folds, a blowhole and wild moorland. After a very welcome supper of soup and sandwiches at Ted Lavelles in Cashel, a number of tireless walkers later attended a thoroughly enjoyable Quiz Night at the Strand Hotel in Dugort.
Sunday's walk took place in Currane, the remote and spectacular peninsula of land that connects Achill Island with the County Mayo mainland. After meeting at the historic Currane House, the walkers ascended Corraun Hill. This snow-capped peak offered fantastic views over Achill Island, Achillbeg, Clare Island and Clew Bay. Great fun was to be had with the remnants of snow that still lay in sheltered areas.
The walkers were able to explore a natural terrace with glaciated features of truncated spurs, hanging valleys and spectacular corrie lakes (23 in total). This walk covered a distance of 12km approximately with a height gain of 600 mtrs. On Wednesday 17th March the final walk of the Achill Walks Festival was available as Achill's many pipe bands took to the roads. This all-day celebration offers a variety of bands to follow as they march between villages on Achill.
